Take control of seasonal allergies
If you find that you are constantly sneezing or your eyes are swelling and watery, then pollen may be to blame. During the spring, trees are normally the main culprit. In the fall, it’s pollen from ragweed.
These particles are very fine and become airborne causing the pollen to blow into your eyes and into your lungs when you take a breath. But barricading yourself indoors isn’t the answer.
According to the EPA, the air quality in our homes can be up to 5 times more polluted than the air outside.1 While closing the windows and doors may help to keep some of the pollen out of your house, it can still find its way in by other means.
Help keep your home allergen-free
Your home should be a safe haven from the outside world. With a little effort and attention to detail, there are some things you can do to help keep your home free from pollen and contaminants that could trigger allergies and asthma.
- Remove your shoes at the door or in the garage.
- Wipe off the bottoms of your pet’s feet at the door before allowing them to re-enter your home.
- Give your pet a bath frequently, especially in the spring.
- Don’t let your pet on the furniture or bedding.
- Dust with a wet cloth or with a vacuum using a furniture attachment.
- Make sure not to use ceiling fans unless they are dust free.
- Keep the windows closed.
- Wash the curtains, throw pillows and blankets.
- Vacuum the carpets, rugs, furniture and mattresses using a vacuum with a HEPA filter.
- Mop the hardwood floors weekly.
- Wash bathroom towels and bathmats.
- Take a shower before going to bed to remove contaminants before getting into bed.
- Put dirty clothes in a hamper and wash laundry often.
- Dry your clothes in a dryer and not outside on a clothesline.
- Wash bedsheets and bed covers regularly.
- Consider using an indoor air purifier with a HEPA filter to remove airborne pollutants that get trapped in your home.
